£600 - £950
A fine George V sterling silver "Chippendale" style challenge salver by the renowned London silversmith Richard Comyns, hallmarked London, 1928. Of square form with incurved corners and a raised, moulded rim, the center is elegantly engraved as a memento for the "Wimbledon Town Golf Club Challenge Salver, 1928." Featuring the club's R.W.G.C. crest, this heavy-gauge piece (308g) represents a significant year in the history of Wimbledon golf. A superior example of inter-war London silver craftsmanship.
Maker: William Comyns & Sons (Richard Comyns)
Origin: London, UK
Year: 1928
Weight: 308g
Dimensions: 16.7cm x 16.7cm
Condition: Excellent; hallmarks are crisp and the engraving is beautifully preserved.
Auctioneer's Note: Comyns silver is highly prized for its "weight in hand." The historical connection to the Wimbledon Town Golf Club, in its final year before its 1928 name change, makes this a rare "transitional" piece of sporting memorabilia.
